Using open-sourced software
December 2, 2006 | | Leave a Comment
Yesterday, I had a student who could not pull up his presentation for his career exploratory class. I asked him to let me take a look. PowerPoint did not recognize the file format. This student had created the presentation using OpenOffice.org’s Impress. OpenOffice.org is a multiplaform suite of office productivity tools similar to those offered in Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is free to download, use and distribute. Impress, the suite’s presentation software, provided an option to re-save the slideshow as a PowerPoint file, thus allowing the student to use it for his class. This incident reminded me to share my knowledge of free software and other information with students. Children who have computers, but whose parents cannot afford the latest software, can still produce quality work by using this wonderful suite of productivity tools.
