Does Spelling Matter?

May 31, 2007 | |

Some people think that spelling should not matter. I disagree.  While spelling rules are relaxed with informal writing like IM and text messaging, good spelling is important when writing for publication. Students need to be cognizant of this fact.

Mindy McAdams, a journalism professor, author, and blogger, compares using poor spelling skills to spilling food on your clothes:

Bad spelling makes you look lazy. That’s my opinion on the subject. It’s true that some geniuses can’t spell, but some geniuses walk around with gravy stains on their shirts. That’s what bad spelling seems like to me: a big, obvious gravy stain in the middle of your writing.

I do not want to wear a stain on my writing. Do you?

I challenged my students to take a spelling test and to discuss the importance of developing good spelling skills.

The way Kuralt feels about misspelled words is not happy, yet he says misspelled words are ok. He said that our country is horriable at spelling and that is is entirely excusable.

Kuralt gives his attitude directly by saying that “the point about americans spellingis the, however awful, it serves the casue of individualism and serves the purpose.

    1. I think Kuralt thinks misspelling shows individualism, and is acceptable. It serves a purpose and we read and understand what the person means even though the word is misspelled.

    2. In order for the reader to know his attitude towards this he gives examples from what people do and states that it’s not a problem. You can infer that he dosen’t care much about the mispellings of words.

    3. I think you should spell english words correctly, because people know exactly what you mean when you say something, they don’t have to guess.

I feel that english words should be spelled correctly becasue you are taught to spell them and you should always know how to spell them what ever the situation is.

    1. I think the author feels that people should spell all the words right in other words he highly disapproves.
2.The reader mostly can infer it as well as see it directly./
3.I guess it is important because you need to know the correct way instead of always spelling it wrong.
4.I did good on the easy. But on the hard I didnt do to good.

    2. Lets the reader infer it .
3.You dont have to as long as you get the message through clear.
